(magyarul lásd lent). The following amateur shots were taken as an annex of a botanical photography in December 2004.Species included in the video:Mauritius bottle-palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis), rare endemic palm species.Terminalia catappa, Roystonia palm-alley, Petrea volubilis, Nelumbo nucifera, Victoria amazonica, Dipsochelis elephantina giant turtle, Ficus religiosa.Pamplemousses. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden. In 1735, Labourdonnais, the first French governor of Mauritius (Ile de France at that time) established a vegetable garden to supply boatmen and people in the capital, Port Louis. Soon after, trees from the other French colonies, for instance for fruit and rigging timbers, were planted for the purpose of acclimatization. Between 1810 and 1849 the garden became forlorn. From 1849 James Duncan had started the rehabilitation and development of the garden again and used it as improvement and research base for the sugar industry. To help fight malaria, many thousands of Eucalyptus trees were grown where swamps had been drained. Since 1913, the garden has been under the authority of the Agricultural ministry.Access is free for visitors. Many people come to visit from the capital.(Hungarian reference: article by Reményi E. Le Jardin des Pamplemousses. Maurice: Typographie du Mercantile Record Company 1887.)The garden is compellingly beautiful and in very good condition despite frequent attendance. When you are there you see many security people but not many signs describing the plant species. Perhaps only 15% are described. Some species are represented by huge specimens.About 80 palm and about 40 indigenous plants from the the Mascarene Islands can be found among the nearly 600 species of the garden. In plantgeographical aspect Mauritius is a member of the Mascarene Islands, which got their name from a Portugese boatman, Pero Mascarenhas, who was the first to put these islands on European maps. Other islands of the group are Reunion (formerly Bourbon Island), Mauritius and Rodrigues.English descriptions with a map and list of species can be bought.Aldabra giant turtles (Seychelle islands) live in a fenced part of the garden.
